In 1913, Basail Thana was formed with ten unions from Tangail Thana. The names of the ten unions of that time were: (1) Basail, (2) Habla, (3) Kanchanpur, (4) Kashil, (5) Kauljani, (6) Fulki, (6) Dubail, (6) Jadavpur, (9) Hatibandha and (10) Gazaria. At the time of establishment of Sakhipur Thana in 1986, Jadavpur, Hatibandha and Gazaria Unions were included in Sakhipur Thana. In 1973, Dubail was separated from Basail and moved to Delduar Upazila. Basail Upazila was established in 1983 with the remaining 6 unions.
Naming: It is not unreasonable to think that the name Basail is influenced by the names of other places in the district including Tangail. Dubail, Karail, Nikrail, Betrail, Kukrail, Michail, Banail, Ghatail, Pathrail, Sakrail, Bajail, Sehrail, Kokail, the name of Basail may have floated in the distant past in a faint current of the Bangshai river. Even then, the origin of this name is like that of Nana Muni.
