Basail upazila has an area of 156 sq km. 90% of the families living in this area are dependent on agriculture. There are a total of 26,173 agricultural families in the upazila. According to the Department of Agriculture, the number of large farmers with more than 3 hectares of land is 1,010. The number of medium farmers whose land area is limited to 1-3 hectares is 4,456 families. The remaining 21,698 families are small, marginal and landless farmers with a total land area of less than 1 hectare.
